Development of brake system, incorporating dual piston disk brakes on front and nonservo drum brakes on rear was joint program between American Motors and Bendix Automotive Products Div; design of disk brake involves operating pressures and temperatures requiring lining of special characteristics; development of lining was vital part of overall engineering program; use of nonservo drum brakes in rear was result of complete review of principles and objectives in front-to-rear brake balance; problems encountered with respect to lining life and brake noise.
