Since 1941 U S Bureau of Public Roads conducted research program to determine periodically braking performance levels of motor vehicles operating on public highways; data obtained were used to promote improvement in general level of brake performance for all types of vehicles, provide information that may be used in establishing highway design standards, and serve as basis for revising brake performance standards; most recent study was completed in Nov 1963; results of study indicated that braking performance generally improved regardless of vehicle type, weight, or capacity.
