In electrification program by Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railway, for converting 60-cycle a.c. into 3000-volt d.c., mercury-arc rectifiers were chosen, in preference to motor-generators, because of their relatively low first cost, high efficiency, and ability to carry heavy overloads without injury; other advantages are small floor space and simple foundations. From article, by E. L. MORELAND, previously indexed from Gen. Elec. Rev., Mar. 1931, under classification of Railroad Electrification -- United States.
