First of trio of liners building for Matson Navigation Co., San Francisco, at Fore River plant of Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp.; length o.a. 632 ft.; beam 79 ft.; draft 28 ft.; displacement 26,000 tons; speed 20 1/2 knots; vessels will be propelled by twin screws, and main propelling machinery will consist of three turbines of 22, 000 s.hp. and set of single reduction gears on each shaft; steam supplied by 12 water-tube boilers.
