Fundamental requirements of airplane engines are discussed, covering minimum weight per horsepower, maximum dependability, durability and economy, minimum cost, and maximum ease of maintenance; relative importance of these requirements, from point of view of airplane designer, in power plants of various types of airplanes; consideration of airplane engine as integral part of airplane.
