Problem of propellers for use on geared-down engines; installation of reduction gearing between crankshaft of engine and propeller hub when increase of airplane performance characteristics more than offsets added complications of installation; advantages and disadvantages of reduction gearing; decision of when to use gears must result from compromise between gains and losses involved; amount of net gain depends largely upon particular engine and airplane combination and its designed performance.
