No. 318: Description of trials for determining accurately speed and resistance of U.S.S. Los Angeles with and without water-recovery apparatus, and to clear up apparent discrepancies between speeds attained in service and in original trials in Germany; water-recovery apparatus increases resistance of Los Angeles about 20 per cent and reduces propulsive efficiency about 7 per cent; resistance could be eliminated by adopting type of water-recovery apparatus using surface of hull for cooling area.
