Works were built during years 1903-1908, and cover area of 78 acres; coal arrives in ships at gas-works harbor and is unloaded and transported by private cranes, engines, and trucks from harbor to works; horizontal retort house is one of largest of its kind in world, and contains two benches of 32 settings each; each setting has 8 retorts; daily coal-gas output is 113,000 cu. m., with 15 per cent reserve.
