History of development of harbor from time of early European settlement in 1500; recent work completed consists of dredging of channel approaching port, 17,000 ft. long, 450 ft. wide, 35-37 ft. deep; dredging of 129 acres of mooring space outside harbor to depth of 30 ft. at low water; land reclamation of about 150 acres in middle of breakwater.
