Historical survey; development of Townend ring in England and N.A.C.A. cowling in United States; theory of engine cooling; polygonal and circular rings; practical experience has shown that Townend ring gives better cooling than any other available low-drag cowling for radial engines; accuracy of prediction of full-scale performance with ring made from tests with models.
