System for indicating relative physical and analytical value of railroad fuel coals is submitted; New York Central Lines are obtaining excellent results by regularly assigning same grade of coal to particular service; table gives average consumption of fuel by locomotives in freight service, shown in pounds of fuel per 1000 gross ton-miles for each month of 1927, 1926, and five-year period of 1922 to 1926; corresponding statistics of locomotive-fuel consumption in passenger service.
