Recent survey shows that fishermen are now showing preference for Diesel engines of all types to power their ships; use of Diesel and surface ignition oil engine spread rapidly among fishermen; being installed both in cannery-owned boats and private craft; boats for salmon and herring fisheries range in size from 40 to 65 ft. in length; seven different makes of 4-cycle airless-injection Deisel engines being used.
