Sept n 9 p 56 + 33-37: Novel experiments were tried on S. S. Lake Fondulac; floating drydock for handling ships in final stage of dismemberment; first torch cutting on Lake Fondulac was done by oxyacetylene method, bottles of oxygen and acetylene being used; substitution of coke-oven gas for acetylene. Oct n 10 p 66 + 33-36: Methods employed at eastern shipyards were largely those common to all scrapping operations; lifeboats were repaired and equipped to government specifications; all steering apparatus was reconditioned; dismantling operation was constantly changing; salvaged equipment in use. Nov n 11 p 60 + 61-64: Ships yield 216,532 tons of steel scrap; progressive operation followed at main dismantling dock; auxiliary machinery was removed; large quantities of clean steel were salvaged from ships; loading into charging boxes; 75 per cent of company's channel-iron needs at Fordson plant were supplied with material from ships early in 1928; 15 tons of nonferrous metal was recovered from each ship. Dec n 12 p 45-48 + 60: Reconditioning of marine engines and boilers took place in Detroit, Toledo and Ironton railroad shops at Fordson; steps in reconditioning boilers; special surveys were made to determine how equipment originally designed for marine service could be adapted to land use within company; electric fixtures were salvaged from ships in large quantities.
