Purpose of paper is to acquaint engineers with efforts of railroads to abate smoke nuisance and to offset impression that locomotives in municipal areas are chief offenders as spreaders of smoke and grime; engine crews can do much to remedy conditions; pride of crew must be appealed to rather than to set rules to be obeyed under threat of punishment; direct steaming of locomotives from central boilers is working out satisfactorily in several instances.
