First vessels to be constructed new in United States having their steam plants especially designed for use of pulverized coal fuel; will carry 7000 long tons of coal; 350 ft. long between perpendiculars; coal bunkers will be gravity feeding; propelling machinery different in each ship; superheat adopted for water-tube boilers; geared turbines for water-tube boiler ship; reciprocating engine for second vessel; coal crusher of portable type; aero-type pulverizers adopted.
