Review of experience in fatigue cracking in railroad axles; results of laboratory fatigue tests on full-scale axle specimens under simulated rotating bending are presented; investigation was undertaken for eliminating fatigue cracking and fretting under press fits of wheel-axle sets; introduction of stress-relieving groove in which edge of press fit overhangs groove, reduced fretting and increased life of test specimens; suitable rolling technique employing three rollers of slightly different profile radii was developed.
