Design procedure evolved for relating depth between tie and subgrade to axle loading and traffic speed; article describes first phase of investigation into effects of cyclic loading on behavior of soils in general, and London Clay in particular; object of investigation is to arrive at design method relating traffic speed and axle-load to depth of construction interposed between tie and top of natural subgrade.
