Paper describes studies by British Railways currently in progress for improving traffic control; hardware is developed for communication system which can provide continuous two-way speed and data link between control centers and moving trains, and special-purpose train-borne computer which will output continuously maximum safe speed for display to driver; communication system consists of pair of insulated cables laid 30 cm apart in center of track; they are energized at frequencies between 20 and 150 kHz, and are coupled with receivers on trains; junction optimization technique and display of speed control.
