By assuming that railroad line with constant gradient has steady flow of either freight or passengers in one direction, it is shown that, except for case of downgrade, sum of operating and time delay costs is convex function of velocity and train size; thus optimal velocity and size may be found by gradient or other methods; from this headway and power required may be found; numerical example with sensitivity analysis is presented; solution for optimal train velocity and size on level track was found by using small computer.
