Tests were carried out with variable gage Talgo train set in which system of independently rotating wheels lends to operation of variable gage running; stability and braking tests at speeds up to 170 km/hr were undertaken on trains running between Spain and France; feature of gage-changing installation is that while passing through it, wheels are released from load; nylon shoes are fitted to suspension unit frames at axlebox level; train arriving on 5-ft 6 in. gage can be propelled, after locomotive has been detached, at 15 km/hr on to installation.
