Double-track line at Cleveland, Ohio, 4 1/2 mi long, is built with Thermit-type butt welds which are made after rail is laid; two parts forming mold with integral crucibles are applied from opposite sides of rails and are held in position with bolts; molds are expendable; with steel pan in position under rails, all openings between rails and mold are closed with sand; two steel pipe sections are placed atop crucible.
