Criteria applied to system being built by Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) in San Francisco, Calif; system will consist of 75 mi of subways, tunnels, aerial lines, surface lines, and trans-bay underwater tube linking population centers of Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco, which have combined area of 1500 sq mi and population of 2,500,000 persons; areas of investigations carried out and details of track construction, power supply system, d-c contact rails, d-c negative return system, rectifier substations, and automatic train control which will include train protection and line supervision; cars will offer marked advancement in styling and comfort; fares will be dependent upon length of ride and vended and collected with automatic equipment.
