Derivation of basic theory and comparisons with axial machines; efficiency of centrifugal is lower than that of axial compressors; for given performance, centrifugal is much lighter than axial, and is preferable on grounds of simplicity and robustness; problem of fouling up of working surface is of much less importance in centrifugal than axial; disadvantage of centrifugal when used in aircraft, is large frontal diameter which gives rise to high drag.
