Apparatus described needs no attachment to rail; weight of rail, whether top worn only or combined with side wear, is read directly on single scale; it also supplies data from which cross section of worn rail is reproduced subsequently; depth of side wear is gaged by horizontally sliding piece advanced by graduated cam until it touches rail.
