Advantages of a-c on ship include low capital cost, shorter delivery time, simpler types of motors and generators, maintenance costs reduced, good installation to earth is more easily maintained in service, simpler and more convenient motor starting, cheaper spare parts, reduced fire risk, reduced operating costs in harbor; simple protection of motors and equipment, reduced cable costs, ready assembled switchgear units and simple voltage transformation.
