Running results of tugboat "Tom Jay" fitted two years ago with four Gardner Diesel engines rated 102 bhp at 800 rpm, each driving hydraulic pump which supply motive power for hydraulic motor driving screw direct; efficiency 87.75% for standing pull trial with heavy load, 78% when towing only 529 ton; results claimed inferior to Diesel electric and direct coupled Diesel drive.
