Method used by H. TSIEN to derive similarity rules for hypersonic flows is utilized to derive T. von KARMAN's similarity rules for transonic flows; at lower limit of transonic region of flow theory yields formula for critical stream Mach numbers of given family of symmetrical profiles; this formula can also be obtained by means of Prandtl-Glauert smallperturbation theory.
