Advantages of track type landing gear, utilizing rubber belt " caterpillar" tread, developed by Firestone and installed on big Fairchild C-82 "Flying Boxcar," include ability to operate from sand, bare ground and sod, sinking less than 1/3 as much as tires; frozen tundra, ice and wind swept snow areas should be equally accessible; design eliminates bounce from rough landings; braking action is more efficient.
