Brief historical survey of development of Rhine Shipping in general and of contribution made by Sulzer Bros, Winterthur, Switzerland, to introduction and improvement of motor propulsion; before war in 1939, 305 Sulzer engines with total output of about 80,000 hp were in service in 270 motorships; at present this number is considerably greater; for 1947 alone, 42 ships were listed for engining, their 68 plants developing total of about 35,000 hp.
