Cone Penetrometer used in study of soils trafficability has been developed by U S Corps of Engineers at Waterways Experiment Station in Virginia; readings in soft soils upto approximately 3 ft indicate shearing resistance of soil and its capability of passing heavy vehicles; cone penetrometers have been used successfully in Europe to reduce number of loading tests.
