During Normandy invasion port of Cherbourg was virtually without electric power because of damage to generating equipment; generators on destroyer escort, USS Donnell were used to supply power; prior to Cherbourg incident, Bureau of Ships started study of a-c electric propelled ships to determine which would be most suitable to supply shore power; turbine electric a-c destroyer escort vessels found to be best suited; practical applications.
