All front line combat ships and most auxiliary ships in Navy are driven by turbines powered by steam generated in water tube boilers; oil is used to generate steam; in order to obtain utmost speed and cruising radius, and to install greatest possible amount of armor and armament, there has been steady demand for reduction in weight and in space occupied by boilers and engines; various water tube boiler designs discussed.
