Most important use made of pavement markings for traffic control is marking of center and lane lines, no passing zone markings, stop and crosswalk lines, directional markings, etc, on pavements; attempt at developing uniform system of marking and signing for no passing zones made in 1940 by Am Assn State Highway Officials when it adopted standards for marking and signing such zones; feature of system of marking is use of solid yellow auxiliary, or barrier stripe to right of normal center line.
