Two-decked bridge over River Tyne at Newcastle officially opened for railway traffic Sept 28 1849; it is 1337 1/2 ft long with six clear spans, each of 125 ft and eight masonry approach spans; upper deck carries three railway tracks and lower deck carries roadway with double tramway; each span consists of four cast iron tied arches.
