Before predicting advancement of commercial transports for next 5 or 10 yr, evolution of speed is examined to give clue regarding extrapolation of speeds for future; speeds of 525 mph for turbojet and 450 mph for turboprop transport appear possible in United States within 3 to 4 yr; consideration of total cost of operation and profit potential for turbojet, turboprop and reciprocating engine airplanes for airline operation.
