Approximate theory of parachute opening is suggested; formula is derived for critical opening speed which indicates variation of critical speed with fabric porosity, rigging line length, etc, of order observed in wind tunnel tests; assuming simple form for air flow about parachute, formula is obtained also for rate of opening of canopy.
