Article explains how Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad stripped all of fouled pit run gravel from 7-mi stretch of multiple track main line, within Chicago yard limits, and replaced it with blast furnace slag; two power belt conveyors were used which were arranged so as to receive old material from ballast excavating machine and discharge it into gondola cars in work train on adjacent track; ballast excavator, known as Ballastex, also used.
