Westinghouse heating elements, applied to rails of important turnouts in Gresham interlocking plant in Chicago, by Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, consist of coiled nickel chrome wire centered in magnesium oxide and enclosed within nickel silver tube; active heat radiating element of nickel chrome wire is varied in length and in heat output according to location in which it is applied.
