General weakness of axles is within region of wheel fit near inside hub face where axle fatigue fractures occur in service; paper presents data from laboratory fatigue tests of full size 11 1/2 in. diam driving axles to investigate such failures; suitability of present design of axle testing machine; correlation of 11 1/2-in. and 2-in. axle tests.
