Progress in cargo ship propulsion; over period of 15 yr, exhaust steam turbine, whether added to existing machinery or built in with new engines, has proved means of reducing coal rate at least 25%; while principally associated with Bauer-Wach system and vessels of large tonnage, attempts were made to simplify and cheapen machinery to make it attractive alternative to motor ship.
