Study attempts to determine injury patterns in lateral impact accidents and to suggest design changes which will reduce injuries; 48 lateral impact accidents were studied; side-swipe accidents produced serious injury only when occupant's elbow was protruding through window or when occupant space of vehicle was seriously compromised; intersection impacts and drifting impacts, particularly when impact was caused by vehicle approaching from opposite direction, caused most serious injuries; type of injuries occurring; door was most common injury-producing structure of vehicle.
