Practical method of expanding usefulness of existing surface ships with no increase in manpower; in typical application, surface ship employs surface vehicles of high speed HUNTER hulls; vehicles incorporate constant dead-rise configuration for directional stability and seakeeping ability; integrated radio control and depth measuring system allows for 1 mi spacing abeam of mother ship while internally recording bathymetric data on magnetic tape; echo sounding data may be monitored by mother ship for periodic equipment adjustment by remote control; records are played back for data analysis.
