Experimental procedures are reviewed that are required to operate windowless photomultiplier detectors as photon counters; requirements for obtaining well-defined counting plateau under conditions of operation met in laboratory vacuum systems are emphasized; determination of both absolute quantum efficiency of detector and dynamic range over which response of detector varies linearly with rate of photons is described; methods used to determine photometric efficiency of monochromator and its detection system are discussed.
