Mapping ocean water clarity from space ship photography was shown to be feasible by studies of 70 mm color transparencies from Gemini flights; prototype global map of coastal ocean water turbidity was constructed on basis of relationship between water transparency and its color and visibility of shoals; for comparison, in situtransparency data taken by oceanographic ships was mapped; resulting global maps of coastal water clarity indicate that about 35 % of world's coastal sea floor can be mapped out to 20 m depth by aerial photogrammetry.
