Brief survey of development of high-speed railroads in Europe and their technical limitations is followed by description of new Tokaido line; designed for maximum speed of 250 km/hr and 139 to 172 km/hr average commercial speed, 515 km long 1.435 m gage line entailed construction of 68 km of tunnels and 44 km of bridges; description of tunnel and earthwork, viaducts, electric power distribution system, and rolling stock.
