Field test is described which compares core densities and air permeabilities obtained on asphalt concrete when compacted by several rolling sequences; different procedures used include steel wheel rolling alone and in combination with pneumatic compaction made under variety of test conditions; pneumatic compaction was conducted at pavement temperatures of 275 F without preheating tires by means of release agent added to water lubricating tires; pavement densities of 95% of laboratory compacted values were obtained at 195 to 220 F; values less than 90% were obtained by pneumatic compaction at 135 F.
