Concrete pavements for county and secondary roads in Iowa are designed specifically for light volumes of traffic -- 125 to 600 vehicles/day; pavement sections relatively thin, 6 to 7 in., and only steel used is tie bar across longitudinal center joint every 48 in.; under Iowa standards for rural roads, about 1200 mi were paved in past 10 yr; performance of thin pavement was very good; other economies result from building roads to existing grade, and using slip form paving.
