Six year research program is described which resulted in complete revision of standard barrier designs for roadsides, medians, and bridges specified by New York State Dept of Public Works; study included comprehensive theoretical analysis of forces generated between vehicle and barrier during impact; four mathematical models are produced capable of predicting trajectory of vehicle in collision with given barrier; dynamic tests on various guard rail posts imbedded in different types of soil contribute to determination of barrier system and optimization of post size and embedment conditions.
