Research undertaken by Road Research Laboratory, Great Britain, to establish main factors influencing skidding resistance on wet roads; road surface characteristics and desirable standards of performance and tire properties contributing to resistance are discussed; selective use by highway engineers of roadstones with high resistance to polishing and use of dead rubber for treads of car tires have been particularly effective in checking skidding accident rates; with increases in volume and speed of traffic, problems of how to maintain required road surface texture remain, and it is becoming increasingly important to keep check on skidding resistance of wet roads.
