Study of time-dependent gas density profile within various modifications of accelerator was initiated; initial measurements showed that no more than 15% of injected propellant was present within accelerator barrel at any one time; propellant injector port modifications were made which raised figure to over 90%; controlled triggering of discharge simultaneous with maximum propellant fraction led to marked increase in engine efficiency; of three techniques for making more than 90% of injected propellant available to discharge, only two seem useful, i.e. use of ball seat for redirecting gas steam, and use of large valve voltages.
